Ubisoft is a hallmark name in the video game industry, coming out with many popular franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Just Dance. They’re a founding member of Playing for the Planet, an alliance of gaming companies who are committed to taking action on the climate crisis.
Alongside efforts to reduce their own emissions in line with a 1.5°C SBTi pathway, Ubisoft is making voluntary contributions to climate projects across the world.
Supporting climate projects isn’t a straightforward task for companies. There are many hurdles when building an impactful contribution portfolio that’s consistent with a climate program. The carbon market isn’t only increasing in size, but in complexity too. There are lots of different types of projects to choose from, traders and intermediary actors to deal with, and new and alternative certification standards emerging.
There’s also a lot of confusion about how to appropriately incorporate contributions into a company’s climate program and align them with corporate values. As a result, it can hinder some and deter others from developing a coherent strategy and supporting projects that’ll make a real difference.
“As part of Ubisoft’s commitment to contributing to global carbon neutrality, and in addition to our efforts to directly reduce the company’s carbon footprint, we finance projects to avoid and capture greenhouse gases. Sweep helped us develop a meaningful portfolio of climate contribution projects that also bring benefits to many of the local communities around us,” says Nicolas Hunsinger, Director of Corporate Environmental Sustainability at Ubisoft.
Contributions, when coupled with reduction, are key to supporting global efforts to achieve planetary net zero. To do it right, here are a few points to keep in mind when building your strategy:
Curate a diverse portfolio of climate projects that’s consistent with your company’s reduction strategy and identity.
Connect with project developers to learn, stay informed, and have a clear understanding of the impact of your contributions.
Educate your employees on the role of contributions in your decarbonization efforts and how to communicate accurately to avoid greenwashing.
“We invited all our team members to vote for their favorite projects, and the support from Sweep helped us to successfully and transparently engage them in our sustainability strategy,” says Nicolas Hunsinger, Director of Corporate Environmental Sustainability at Ubisoft.
